CHAPTER FOUR
Thereâs a black Escalade parked next to my rental when I arrive at the cabin half an hour later. A tall handsome man with dark hair cropped short steps out of the porch and makes his way down the steps, a wide smile on his face.
âYou must be Autumn Alonso, Estelle's granddaughter. She told me so much about you. My deepest condolences to your loss.â He extends his hand and I reluctantly shake it. âIâm Michael Forster of Forster Ventures. Your grandmother was my client.â
I fold my arms in front of me. Iâm still shaken up by my meeting with Griffin and am not in the mood to be social.
âHow did you know I was here?â
âActually, I didnât,â he replies. âI was in the area and thought Iâd stop by. I hope you donât mind that I occasionally do that to see if you happen to be here. Iâve sent you quite a few letters. I assumed theyâd be forwarded to you.â
I remember the name now. Letters from Forster Ventures were among the mail I picked up from Granâs house and are still sitting in the paper bag. âIâll make sure to open them later today.â
âI could save you the trouble and give you a cash offer right now,â he says, slipping his hand into his breast pocket and producing an envelope that he hands to me. âYour grandmother had actually accepted our offer, at least verbally with some adjustments which Iâve included here, but she passed away two days before she was supposed to sign the purchase agreement.â
I take the envelope. âIâll think about it.â
âCongratulations on your latest collection, by the way,â he adds. âMy sister is a big fan of yours. She loved your last collection, the one that launched in Paris. Itâs a pretty big deal for us New Mexicans to see one of our own make it over there.â
âThank you.â
âWell, Iâm not going to take any more of your time, Miss Alonso. Itâll be one less thing for you to worry about, you being based in New York now,â he says. âAnd I am more than willing to increase the amount of the cash offer as well.â
âIâll think about it.â
âPlease do,â he says. âMy contact information is in that offer, and my personal cell number is there, too. Call me if you have any questions. Any at all.â
He says goodbye and gets in the Escalade, waving one more time as if he were an old friend before driving away. Itâs almost amusing if he werenât so obvious in his attempt to charm me. As if Iâd say yes.
But then, apparently, Gran did.
Inside the cabin, I open the envelope Seymour had sent me shortly after Gran died, the same one I barely glanced at before signing my name on lines heâd flagged. Itâs not like me to skim through legal documents but Granâs death shocked me, only to be followed by Tomâs cheating right after her funeral. He and I hadnât been intimate for months so
