CHAPTER FOUR

There’s a black Escalade parked next to my rental when I arrive at the cabin half an hour later. A tall handsome man with dark hair cropped short steps out of the porch and makes his way down the steps, a wide smile on his face.

“You must be Autumn Alonso, Estelle's granddaughter. She told me so much about you. My deepest condolences to your loss.” He extends his hand and I reluctantly shake it. “I’m Michael Forster of Forster Ventures. Your grandmother was my client.”

I fold my arms in front of me. I’m still shaken up by my meeting with Griffin and am not in the mood to be social.

“How did you know I was here?”

“Actually, I didn’t,” he replies. “I was in the area and thought I’d stop by. I hope you don’t mind that I occasionally do that to see if you happen to be here. I’ve sent you quite a few letters. I assumed they’d be forwarded to you.”

I remember the name now. Letters from Forster Ventures were among the mail I picked up from Gran’s house and are still sitting in the paper bag. “I’ll make sure to open them later today.”

“I could save you the trouble and give you a cash offer right now,” he says, slipping his hand into his breast pocket and producing an envelope that he hands to me. “Your grandmother had actually accepted our offer, at least verbally with some adjustments which I’ve included here, but she passed away two days before she was supposed to sign the purchase agreement.”

I take the envelope. “I’ll think about it.”

“Congratulations on your latest collection, by the way,” he adds. “My sister is a big fan of yours. She loved your last collection, the one that launched in Paris. It’s a pretty big deal for us New Mexicans to see one of our own make it over there.”

“Thank you.”

“Well, I’m not going to take any more of your time, Miss Alonso. It’ll be one less thing for you to worry about, you being based in New York now,” he says. “And I am more than willing to increase the amount of the cash offer as well.”

“I’ll think about it.”

“Please do,” he says. “My contact information is in that offer, and my personal cell number is there, too. Call me if you have any questions. Any at all.”

He says goodbye and gets in the Escalade, waving one more time as if he were an old friend before driving away. It’s almost amusing if he weren’t so obvious in his attempt to charm me. As if I’d say yes.

But then, apparently, Gran did.

Inside the cabin, I open the envelope Seymour had sent me shortly after Gran died, the same one I barely glanced at before signing my name on lines he’d flagged. It’s not like me to skim through legal documents but Gran’s death shocked me, only to be followed by Tom’s cheating right after her funeral. He and I hadn’t been intimate for months so
